August 2016 Tip of the Month
August 16, 2016The wild west of credit cards
August 30, 2016 Do you remember the old Tootsie Pop commercial where the kid asked the owl how many licks it takes to get to the center? Two was the answer. Do you know how long it can take a credit card thief to place a skimmer on a terminal? Two. Seconds that is. Check out this video!
Did you see it? This was done so subtly that you might have missed it. The second man in line, with practiced ease it seems, attaches the skimmer while the clerk is looking the other way, either getting something for the first man or being intentionally distracted by him. The skimmer seems to look exactly the same as the terminals so spotting it will be extremely difficult. Retrieving it will probably also take only a few seconds and with that the thief will have potentially thousands of dollars worth of stolen credit card numbers.
There are many different POS terminals on the market. Some leave it to the merchant to use, some are for the customer to use. In this case it is much more convenient for the merchant to have one for the customer’s use. Alas, this is one of the risks that you run as this was probably later at night with the store was minimally staffed so it will not be caught until someone reviews the security tape (if anyone does).
Remember, the liability shift has already taken place. If someone uses a fraudulent card at your place of business then you are on the hook for it unless you have upgraded to one of the new EMV terminals. If you have not upgraded to one of the new EMV terminals then now is the time to do so.
